Conclusion

The emphasis which scholars of the Renaissance put on humanist studies led to many changes in the era’s communication. Schooling improved, and a new focus on word-based studies allowed for an increased literacy rate amongst Europeans. This caused a shift from the almost exclusively image and dialect-driven communication of the Middle Ages, to an increased use in the written word. The interest which humanists had in Greek culture also led to a rise in Greek literacy. Not only did this reintroduce a largely forgotten language, but it also provided a vast intellectual range that had previously been limited. Finally, the demand which humanist scholars had for texts acted as a catalyst for the development of print technology. This introduced a faster mode of written communication, which went on to cause the formation of center margins in European society.
